Things Roundup - Jan 17 2024

My very funny friend Sophie solves every movie.

Artist Suzanne Treister created some very striking and colorful fake stills from videogames. I aspire to make games that make someone feel like I do when I look at these.

This breakdown of Netflix's slop aesthetic and mode of production has gone around recently, and it's as good as everyone says. One element that I want to add is I find it deeply frustrating to miss out on work from directors and actors I like because it's just fed into the machine, only spotting months or years later that they were in something.

Maddi Chilton's ode to Mad Max (2015) is a good time. Multiple times I have come close to buying this game, but I always feel like I will not have the experience I am looking for. As a society we need more vehicular combat games. There's simply not enough.

Dan Thurot's review of Red Dust Rebellion has really sparked my interest in it. I haven't exactly played many COIN games I don't have any and few people in my game circles do. But as usual though, a sci-fi premise can hook me.

Laura Michet talks about how the item logic operates in Luck Be A Landlord. I really hope we can see more of this in games, and definitely something I'm trying to do in Amberspire. I love when games give you these alien logics and terminology, but more specifically in mundane settings and with goofy little guys and various asides.

Michael H. talks about his specific mode of prepping for running rpg sessions, and a more specifically for hex/point crawl games. I found this a very valuable read and one I'll come back to a few times. Michael was a DM in the Rangers Upon The Coast campaign that I took part in last year, and had a great time.
